TWU was founded in 1962 by a group of Christian businessmen and pastors who wanted to create a university that would integrate Christian faith with academic excellence. The university was originally called Trinity Junior College, and it offered a two-year program of studies. In 1972, the university was renamed Trinity Western College and began offering four-year degrees. In 1985, TWU was granted full university status by the British Columbia government.
